CBD Oil for Dog Seizures

No one wants to see their dog suffer from recurring seizures, especially when there is no known cause or medication that is helping.

The first thing to do if a seizure occurs is take your dog to the veterinarian, they will most likely prescribe them a medication such as phenobarbital, potassium bromide, diazepam, or some other drug.  Be wary, some medication used to treat epilepsy can cause serious side effects in some dogs.

According to the American Kennel Club, up to 30% of dogs with epilepsy still experience seizures when they are on medication. [1]

If your dog is prone to seizures and the prescribed medication isn’t working, then there could be another more natural option to treat them. That option is CBD oil.

CBD oil is being widely researched in animals and humans for its potential health benefits. CBD oil has the potential to treat seizures in dogs, it is harmless, has no side effects, and could be the key to helping your furry friend.

As a pet owner, your first question might be "how much CBD oil do I give my dog for seizures?".

In this article we will be discussing canine epilepsy, how CBD oil can help treat dog seizures, and tips on dosages and how to find the right CBD for your dog.

Canine Epilepsy and Dog Seizures

Canine epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder seen in dogs and it is one of the main causes of recurring seizures. According to the Canine Health Foundation, canine epilepsy has been estimated to affect around 0.75% of the dog population. [2]

Epilepsy’s are bursts of uncontrolled electricity in a dog’s brain, and there is often no cure for it. Medication is typically given to help manage it. Although canine epilepsy is the main cause of seizures, there could still be other underlying causes.

Causes:

  • Underlying health conditions
  • Flea and tick products
  • Herbicides and Pesticides
  • Vaccines
  • Injuries to the head
  • Electrolyte deficiency

These are just a few causes that can trigger seizures among dogs. If your dog suffers from seizures take them to the veterinarian so they can give you further information on the cause.

There are several different causes for dog seizures, but the main cause is canine epilepsy. Canine epilepsy has no cure, but medication is given to manage it.

What is CBD?

Cannabis oil is made from the compound cannabidiol (CBD) which is harvest from the cannabis plant. Everyone has an endocannabinoid system, CBD interacts with endocannabinoids that are found throughout the body.

The highest concentration are found in the brain, nervous system, and spinal column. CBD interacts with them and that is where it has the greatest potential for impact. Legal CBD hemp oil has less than 0.3% THC and has no psychoactive effects due to the compound structure of it.

CBD Oil and Dog Seizures

Several anecdotes and studies show that CBD hemp oil is being used to manage seizures among humans and pets. Before treating your dog's seizures with CBD oil, it is important to understand how it actually works.

Earlier we discussed how CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid receptors found in one's body. Dog's have two types on endocannabinoid receptors in their bodies: CB2 receptors (located in the immune system) and CB1 receptors (centralized in the nervous system and the brain).

The CB1 receptors are the part that have the greatest impact when CBD is given as treatment for seizures. Unlike other prescribed medication for seizures and epilepsy, CBD oil is all natural and has little to no side effects.

It may cause dog's drowsiness, but that's the only known effect it has.  So it is a great alternative natural treatment to try on your furry best friend.

Studies

Seizures are shown to have profound effects on the endocannabinoid system those effects can be made less severe when using CBD oil as a treatment. There is research that suggests CBD improves seizure control in patients with specific epilepsy syndromes. [3]

Since all mammals have an endocannabinoid system, these results can be found to be true among humans and dogs. More studies need to be conducted in order to find out how CBD has the ability to affect the receptors that help calm seizures.

There is one current major clinical trial in development that is going to examine the effects of CBD on seizure activity in dogs.

This study is being conducted by the AKC Canine Health Foundation. Dr. McGrath spoke to the American Kennel Club stating,

“The study is testing CBD on dogs with epilepsy in a controlled research setting. The dogs enrolled in the study are randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or the CBD oil for 12 weeks and then, after a 4-week washout period, receive the opposite drug for an additional 12 weeks. The researchers and the owners are blinded as to which drug is given in each half of the study.” [4]

This would be the first published study to examine this, and the results are extremely important to pet owners who wish to treat their dogs with natural remedies like CBD oil.

CBD oil dosage for dog seizures

The most common question among pet parents is, "how much cbd oil should I give my dog for seizures?". Well that varies on the dog's size and weight. Typically smaller dogs require lower doses and larger dogs require a higher does to see any affect.

Pet CBD products usually have directions on the label related to dosage amount. We suggest following the label, and starting with a small dose then gradually increase if it is needed.

All pet owners want the best for their dog's so we advice to choose dog CBD oil carefully. We have compiled a list of things to look out for when selecting the best CBD option:
