The rise of CBD usage has made headlines in most local and national news since the 2018 Farm bill was passed late last year.

The increase in users is mainly because CBD is well known for the health benefits it provides. It is shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties that make it ideal for treating related conditions such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia.

As you likely know products containing CBD come in various forms like oils, beauty products, vapes, edibles, and also in food and drinks.

The popularity of CBD as a health solution continues to grow with overwhelming interest. One of these many conditions that Cannabidiol is hailed to support with is fibromyalgia.

Several research studies support this claim, and this article features some significant findings that link the benefits of CBD oil and fibromyalgia.

What is Fibromyalgia?

Before looking into the links between CBD and fibromyalgia, it is prudent to explain what this condition is. Fibromyalgia is an incurable disorder that is characterized by painful muscles, fatigue, and a problem with cognitive issues.

Until fairly recently the condition was rather unknown. Though now, at least 10 million people have been diagnosed with the disease according to American rheumatology practitioners.

The statistics show that the majority of fibromyalgia patients are women, although doctors have not been able to explain why this is the case.

Being an incurable condition, fibromyalgia is only treated by suppressing the pain, and that is exactly where CBD comes into play.

CBD for Fibromyalgia, How Does it Work?

CBD is known to deal with acute pain symptoms by supporting the body to reduce levels of inflammation. Some medical practitioners have begun to advise patients with chronic pain symptoms to use CBD either alongside or instead of taking alternative opiod drugs.

To showcase the potential of CBD as a treatment, epileptic children have recently been treated using CBD and doctors realized its effectiveness in reducing seizures which were resistant to other medications.

The effectiveness of CBD in dealing with fibromyalgia has been tested in depth. Whilst some fibromyalgia sufferers swear by their use of CBD, researchers seem unable to comprehensively explain why CBD can suppress some of the disorder's symptoms.

In research conducted in 2009, it was discovered that CBD can enter the neuropathways in the brain which are responsible for sending pain signals to an injured part of the body.

This is one of the ways in which CBD can support the sufferers of fibromyalgia by relieving the discomfort they feel due to this illness.

There have also been discussions on whether CBD could work more effectively when combined with medical marijuana or when used alone.

One specific 2006 research study showed that a combination of CBD and THC could potentially be a best-fit in medical use. A blend of the compound with other chemicals from Cannabis Sativa could have more positive results.

Although in another study in 2016 looking into the theory of clinical endocannabinoid deficiency (CED),  it was realised that a deficiency could cause fibromyalgia in endocannabinoids in the body. Endocannabinoids are the neurotransmitters that attach to cannabinoid receptors in the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS).

This deficiency could be the root cause of fibromyalgia and the related signs and symptoms. Treating this condition with CBD would mean that the lack of cannabinoid could in fact be increased, and the chronic pain could subside. Therefore making the disorder more manageable for sufferers.

How effective is CBD for Fibromyalgia?

CBD for Fibromyalgia

As already mentioned, CBD has been shown to be a potential treatment solution to fibromyalgia symptoms in that the compound alters the way pain is processed in the patient’s body, reducing how pain is felt in the affected areas.

Other practical therapeutic benefits of CBD which are being explored include the following:

The effects that CBD has on fibromyalgia, varies from one person to another. On some the outcome is known to be incredibly beneficial, though we would add that this may not be the case for every patient.

As earlier mentioned, these varying observations and studies which were carried out do a lot to suggest CBD can be incredibly positive for fibromyalgia sufferers, further research is require to fully substantiate the link between CBD and fibromyalgia.

However, some of the differences in results can be attributed to the mislabelling of products like selling off hemp oil as CBD oil while in reality, these are two different products with different benefits on the user.

According to an FDA report, they stated that some hemp products, like hemp oil, contain little traces of CBD while others have none. This could be a reasonable explanation as to why some patients show no response in some studies, after taking the incorrect version of the oil.

Best Form of CBD for Fibromyalgia

Drugs to avoid with CBD
CBD Absorption Type Pros Cons Effective for Fibromyalgia
Sublingual Fast, efficient oily hemp taste Yes
Topical Spot specific Less effective and not long lasting Yes
Ingestion (edibles) Taste Slow disgestion Yes

As we’ve covered previously, CBD can be taken in various formats with each having a different result for the user.

The most commonly used and known way of CBD usages is through using tinctures, which can be taken as drops under the tongue.

These can prove to be incredibly effective and fairly quick working too, supporting the user within anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes.

Another form of application is by using topicals, which absorb the CBD into the skin. This process can take up to an hour for the effects to be felt by the user

Edible are another option with CBD gummies and such like making this CBD absorption method very convenient, and effective.

Finally, and the quickest method to feel the benefits of CBD is through vaping CBD, which really is a growing trend

There’s no set way you should take CBD oil for your fibromyalgia treatment, simply go with what works best for you.

CBD Oil and Fibromyalgia - Final Thoughts

While it's fair to say that CBD oil could be a realistic support option for many fibromyalgia patients, it's almost impossible to quantify to what extent CBD is useful as a treatment plan for each individual.

The reason for that is that more studies are yet to reveal the full and conclusive benefits embedded in CBD, as far as treating fibromyalgia is concerned.

In saying that, more and more fibromyalgia sufferers are trying genuine CBD to support with their condition. Many of which are attesting to the pain relief and lack of inflammation as a result of this treatment.
