Can You Use CBD Oil For Weight Loss?

Cannabis plants have for generations been linked to weight gain due to the fact that marijuana users can often experience a desire to eat a lot more than usual, regularly known as the ‘munchies’.

With the net worth of the weight loss industry currently being estimated at over $168billion, it’s clear that more and more people are seeking various options to support with their weight loss. Sue to this CBD has been celebrated by some as the new sensation in the weight loss market, and also happens to be one of the most researched compounds that derived from the cannabis species.

CBD, which means Cannabinoid, is a compound found in the Cannabis Sativa. This compound is THC free, meaning there are no psychotic effects as compared with the marijuana counterpart which is also a derivative of Cannabis plant. CBD is used to make many products with CBD oil being amongst the most popular.

CBD oil is being more commonly used to treat anxiety, stress, inflammation, diabetes, ADHD, and sleep disorders amongst others ailments.

As CBD oil does not feature the same effects as THC like getting high and stimulating hunger, can it really help with weight loss?

CBD and the Endocannabinoid System (EBS)

CBD can potentially help users reach their weight loss goals due to how it interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (EBS). The main function of the EBS is to maintain and restore balance within the body.

This in-built system has cannabis receptors that respond to certain compounds, these receptors are called the CB1 and CB2.

CB1s are mostly found in the central nervous system and the brain, not anywhere else in the body like the CB2’s.

Recent scientific research has discovered the existence of endogenous cannabinoid substances in the human body that attach themselves to these receptors.

Any intake of CBD compounds into the body triggers these cannabinoids to either activate or block the receptors.

This whole process is believed to be a major contribution related to CBD weight loss and treatment for many other metabolic anomalies.

Research into CBD oil and weight loss

The quest to understand how CBD supports in weight loss has led to a lot more research recently, and the subsequent studies reveal a stunning relationship between CBD and weight loss procedures.

The University of Reading conducted a study that was aimed at comparing three distinct cannabinoids. During the research they used rats as test subjects, and the results indicated that CBD significantly reduced the total amount of food consumption in the rodents.

Since this was true for rodents, it is expected to have the same effect on humans, as the treatment may help people who wish to reduce their weight to achieve this goal.

A May 16th Journal on Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry published a study that indicated that CBD was also a key participant in ‘‘fat-browning’’.

The scientists behind this revelation focused on the effect that CBD has on preadipocyte cells to find out whether CBD could help to treat or prevent obesity.

The findings on CBD from this study were as follows:

  • CBD helps to burn more body calories by boosting the mitochondrial population thus increasing their activity in the human cells
  • CBD also activates body proteins and fat genes that facilitate the process of fat breakdown and oxidation
  • CBD was found to cut short the fat cell generation and the proteins that aid in lipogenesis

Can CBD suppress the appetite?

While many people believe the notion that cannabis will increase the appetite for food, scientists recently confirmed that CBD products do not make you hungry.

In a 2018 study, it is shown THC that stimulates the CB1 receptors in the EBS, which among other things stimulates a person’s appetite. The study also notes that CB1 antagonists could help to control obesity and reduce appetite for food as the antagonists deactivate the receptors.

Though CBD does not shut down CB1 receptors, it influences other molecules to do the 'blocking'. The shutting down of these receptors could aid in reducing appetite and potentially supporting weight loss by preventing any unnecessary eating.

As earlier mentioned, a 2012 study showed that when animals such as rats were exposed to CBD, their appetites became suppressed. However while it is believed to have the same impact, it is yet to be proven for certain that this would apply to human beings.

CBD aids in fat-browning

It is thought by some CBD researchers and indeed users that CBD oil helps to turn white fat in the adipose tissues into the brown fat that enables the body to burn more calories. This is the process we call fat-browning, which is the changing of bad fats into useful fat.

Research conducted in 2016 sheds light on this as scientists behind the study discovered that CBD has a positive impact in the way the human body deals with fat. In addition to changing white fat cells to brown, CBD also activates the breakdown of fats in the human body in a more efficient way.

According to scientists the therapeutic benefits of CBD have a promising future as a preventive measure for obesity patients.

CBD prevents metabolic disorders

In research conducted in 2018, it was noted that there is a fine line between obesity and some metabolic complications such as type 2 diabetes, high levels of cholesterol, and high blood pressure.

Activating the CB1 receptors above the optimum level in the fatty tissues in the body may lead to obesity and expose one to other metabolic complications. However, since CBD can block the CB1 receptors, there is thought to be less risk of becoming obese whilst using CBD oil.

Several highlights in research conducted for cannabis and cannabinoids indicated that CBD’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects reduced blood glucose levels and actually boosted liver health. In one example using CBD treatments on obese rats lowered their cholesterol levels by as much as 25%.

So, can CBD oil help you lose weight?

There are many options available for those that wish to reduce their weight, but for those looking for a modern alternative to support weight loss then CBD oil may well be something you wish to try.

Just ensure you use one of the best CBD oil for weight loss products on the market, as there are lesser quality products available online. Looking at the compounds listed and buying from a producer that includes third party lab reports is a great way to ensure the highest quality.

According to the research we’ve highlighted, the benefits could be incredibly positive and the side effects are few. Although never fail to discuss the usage of CBD with your physician if you're using any kind of prescription medication.

CBD is becoming an increasingly popular method not only for weight loss purposes but for the many other therapeutic benefits embedded in the product. This increase in usage is even more so since the federal government legalised the farming and production of hemp plants and related products across the nation.
